November 30, 2018 | The Advanced Technology Center
Many of the solid materials in our world are crystalline. The description of perfect crystals is mathematical, but in fact, none are perfect. This seminar will examine perfect crystals, the defects in crystals, and the influence of crystal defects on properties.
November 08, 2018 | Publix Super Market
Dr. Schmidt will provide a technical discussion on the advancements in the world of materials and what we as engineering professionals can expect in the next 5 to 20 years. With the advancements in fabrication techniques (additive Manufacturing, aka, 3D printing), to new coatings technologies and new materials, the choices that are available to design engineers are expanding rapidly.
October 16, 2018 | Revolution Golf & Grille
Sponsored by ASM, The Peninsula Engineers Council (PEC) and The Richmond Joint Engineers Council (RJEC). The evening will include access to the golf simulators, a buffet dinner and guest speakers John Quarstein and Nathan Madison.
June 01, 2018 | Colonial Williamsburg
The work at the Armoury Complex in Colonial Williamsburg involves the research, rediscovery, practice, and preservation of the pre-industrial processes for working iron and steel. Come and see a tour of the facility and demonstrations of iron working and traditional forge welding by Master Blacksmith Ken Schwarz.
March 29, 2018 | Langley Research Center
This will be a tour of the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) wind tunnel and mechanical test facilities.
February 18 - February 24, 2018 | Various Locations
We have many things going on this month during Engineers Week, now rebranded as EWEEK (www.DiscoverE.org): the Richmond Joint Engineers Council (RJEC) Celebrating Engineering Ingenuity Day and ASM CO2 Dragster Contest, the RJEC Engineers Week Banquet, the Peninsula Engineers Council (PEC) Engineering Career Days, and the PEC Engineer of the Year Banquet.
February 11, 2018 | Science Museum of Virginia
In support of Engineers Week activities, the Eastern Virginia Chapter of ASM International is sponsoring a CO2 Dragster Contest. The objective of this contest is to teach the participants about materials selection and utilization through the practical task of creating small, CO2 jet powered dragsters.
December 01, 2017 | St. Gertrudes High School
Our ancestor's use of mechanical behavior of minerals and metals spans thousands of years. The effects of crystal defects and microscopic structure on properties, and the fundamentals of electrical and quantum properties have been developed over only a little more than the last hundred years.
(T) Effect of Laser Ablation Coating Removal (LACR) on the Fatigue Behavior of a Steel Substrate (Technical Presentation*)
November 02, 2017 | Kelly's Tavern
Coating removal during shipbuilding and ship repair is laborious and often dangerous endeavor. In recent years, lasers have been used to remove paint in a non-contact fashion, resulting in no metal debris or jarring motions to a workers hands and arms. This project assessed the material property effects on a high strength steel from a 1 kW laser system removing a common epoxy paint from that steel.
