About the Event:

Histories of sciences and technology teach us much about our understanding of the world. The review of the thoughts of the greatest minds as they developed an understanding of the physical world is especially interesting.

Our ancestor's use of mechanical behavior of minerals and metals spans thousands of years. The effects of crystal defects and microscopic structure on properties, and the fundamentals of electrical and quantum properties have been developed over only a little more than the last hundred years.

We still don't know everything . . . and materials science and technology remain complex and interesting fields, open to the young of heart.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Robert Pond Jr. has extensive education and experience in materials and metallurgical engineering fields. He has worked in research and industrial laboratories including the Ballistics Research Laboratory at Aberdeen Proving Ground and the Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. He has taught at the U. S. Naval Academy, Johns Hopkins University, and is presently Chair of Engineering at Loyola University Maryland and Senior Lecturer of Engineering.
