Cost: There is no cost to contestants or spectators although you must build your dragsters yourself before you arrive.
Competitors are encouraged to preregister since time may be limited on the day of the contest. Please send an email to Kurt Thompson containing the following information (only 1. and 2. are required for those past high school):
- Competitor's name (first and last)
- Competitor's email address
- At least one parent's name (first and last)
- Parent's email address
- (Optional) School advisor's name
- (Optional) Advisor's email address
ASM International was founded in 1913 and became known as the American Society for Metals. Today ASM International is the world's largest association of metals-focused materials engineers, scientists, technicians, educators, and students.
A member and volunteer based organization, ASM International serves as a central resource that gathers the latest applied information from the field and disseminates it back to industry, academia, and government through published content, classes, conferences, expositions, and local chapter engagement. We are dedicated to informing, educating, and connecting the materials community to solve problems and stimulate innovation around the world.
Career Day, part of the Engineers Week activities sponsored locally by the Richmond Joint Engineers Council (RJEC), was renamed Celebrate Engineering Ingenuity Day in 2013. The 2018 event is scheduled for the Science Museum of Virginia on Sunday, February 11.
In support of the day's activities, the Eastern Virginia Chapter of ASM International is sponsoring a CO2 Dragster Contest. The objective of this contest is to teach the participants about materials selection and utilization through the practical task of creating small, CO2 jet powered dragsters. The designers must make their vehicles as light as possible in order to score the lowest run times and must consider their material selections carefully to achieve that goal.
With these two factors in mind, the contestant must submit two things:
- A short description of his materials selection thought process
- A qualified vehicle for two timed speed runs
