Chairman's Message:

I hope you can join us for for our final event of the 2017-2018 year at Colonial Williamsburg. We did a tour similar to this two years ago and it was such a good event we have chosen to repeat it. You are also welcome to join us for a dinner locally after the event for those how wish to stay.

This has been a good year thanks to the dedicated volunteers of our local ASM chapter. I want especially thank Jim Hurst of Williamsburg who has been a significant member of our executive team for many years in the Eastern Virginia Chapter. Jim has decided to step down from the executive team and his contributions, wisdom, extensive knowledge of materials and good stories will be missed. Thanks also to Stan Cole for hosting our last chapter meeting for a tour of NASA Langley and the wind tunnels and testings systems that are part of the national treasure we have in NASA Langley.

I wish everyone an enjoyable summer. Please look for our newsletters next fall as we have several good ideas for events in the upcoming 2018-2019 season.

About the Presentation:

The work at the Armoury Complex involves the research, rediscovery, practice, and preservation of the pre-industrial processes for working iron and steel. In 2013 a Tin Shop was added to the complex to illustrate the work in tinplate that was part of the Revolutionary Wartime activity of the shop. Copies of early iron, steel, and tinplate objects are manufactured for use in the town, for other historic sites, and for private commission. The hot working of iron and traditional forge welding will be demonstrated during the tour.

About the Speakers:

Ken Schwarz began as a blacksmith in 1977, working for a smith and establishing his workshop. He ran a business doing historical restoration work from 1979 to 1982 and then joined the workshop at Colonial Williamsburg as an apprentice blacksmith. He earned journeyman status in 1988 and assumed the position of master of the shop in 2004. In his current role he oversees six blacksmiths, four tinsmiths, and a military artificer and presents public programming for Colonial Williamsburg.

Take a video tour of the Armoury Complex with Mr. Schwarz, watch the raising of the tinsmith shop leading up to the opening of the Armoury Complex in November of 2013, or read an interview with Mr. Schwarz discussing his blacksmithing.

Directions and Parking:

There are many different ways to get into Colonial Williamsburg, but parking for our event will be at the Tavern Lot on Francis St. E. at the intersection with Blair St. (460-498 Francis St. E.) It is a five minute walk north on Blair St. and east on E. Duke of Gloucester St. to the entrance of Anderson's Blacksmith Shop. We will meet at that entrance to begin the tour at 5:00 PM.
