Thermal barrier coatings (TBC) typically consist of a MCrAlY metallic bond coat and a zirconia-based ceramic topcoat, and the primary function of TBC is to provide improved oxidation resistance and reduced thermal conductivity at elevated temperature environment.

Woody Beringer, an expert on Oxygen Compatibility in Space Applications from UTC Aerospace Systems (UTAS), will be presenting to the Chapter. Title: Design and Materials Selection for Oxygen System Compatibility in Space Applications Abstract: Oxygen is a widely use chemical in industrial processes. However, it is reactive possibly causing the system components to become the fuel in a serious fire. Methods for evaluating the flammability of material with respect to oxygen pressure and temperature are available. Once the flammability is established, flammable materials are evaluated against a wide range of ignition mechanisms to determine the credibility of an ignition. Finally, the effects of an ignition or fire are evaluated to determine the criticality with respect to safety and the level of collateral damage that might occur. The result is an effective process and documented analysis for determining the system safety. Bio: Mr. Beringer is manager of Space Systems Materials Engineering at UTC Aerospace Systems (UTAS). He has worked at UTAS Space Systems for 33 years and has contributed to major NASA projects including design and development of oxygensystems for the Spacesuit as well as cooling and life support systems for Orion. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hartford and his M.S. in Metallurgy from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is a former member of ASTM G04 committee on Compatibility & Sensitivity of Materials in Oxygen Enriched Atmospheres from 1990-2005.

There will be a tour of the General Electric (GE) Electrical Testing and Materials Labs at the Facility in Plainville, CT. The Chapter will gather at 41 Woodford Ave (Plainville, CT 06062) at 5:15-5:20pm to muster for the tour. The duration will be approximately one hour.
Following the tour, the Chapter will have an informal dinner at J Timothy's in Plainville at 7:00pm (143 New Britain Ave, Plainville, CT 06062). There will not be a pre fixe dinner option, but the restaurant has agreed to provide individual checks for the entire group.

Forensic engineering is the application of engineering principles and practices to determine the cause of the failure of a component or material that resulted in an injury or economic loss. Analysis activities are performed within the framework of the legal system and experts may be called to testify regarding their findings and opinions. Similar to the TV sensationalized NCIS, each case is a puzzle that the investigator must solve. Knowledge of material failure mechanisms and the telltale clues left on fracture surfaces are often essential to solving the puzzle. A number of case studies will be presented that illustrate various material failure mechanisms and the roll of the Forensic Engineer in the legal system.
