Forensic Engineering – Practical Applications of Metallurgy and Failure Analysis in our Legal System.

Fred Anderson
Advantec Engineering LLC.

Forensic engineering is the application of engineering principles and practices to determine the cause of the failure of a component or material that resulted in an injury or economic loss.  Analysis activities are performed within the framework of the legal system and experts may be called to testify regarding their findings and opinions.

Similar to the TV sensationalized NCIS, each case is a puzzle that the investigator must solve. Knowledge of material failure mechanisms and the telltale clues left on fracture surfaces are often essential to solving the puzzle.  A number of case studies will be presented that illustrate various material failure mechanisms and the roll of the Forensic Engineer in the legal system.

Mr. Anderson is the owner and principal investigator of Advantec Engineering – a small consulting company that specializes in forensic engineering and materials failure analysis.  Clients include attorneys, insurance companies, and manufacturing companies of consumer products, commercial products, and industrial equipment.  Mr. Anderson provides root cause failure analysis for industrial clients and is called as an expert witness in legal cases involving the failure of a material or component.  He received a Bachelors of Nuclear Engineering and Master of Science in Metallurgy from Georgia Institute of Technology.
