A summary of the progress achieved in the development and validation of materials models which enable location specific property modeling in titanium will be presented. Topics to be covered will include how the prediction of the location specific microstructures, crystallographic texture and mechanical properties developed in the workhorse titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V may be leveraged to design components outside their current design envelope. In addition to the direction of future research by Rolls-Royce in this field, the challenges to implement this type of technology at Rolls-Royce within its design methods and how to manage its supply chain will be discussed.

Direct observation of deformation processes has been experimentally implemented by our research group where it is possible to capture the sequence of images using a high-speed camera setup. Captured frames can be used to accurately calculate deformation parameters such as strain and strain rate. Effect of microstructure on the deformation path was one of the subjects under investigation. Here thermal grooving as a method of microstructure emersion and development will be presented. Thermally grooved samples will be used to overview the tool-material interaction in cutting and sliding regime. Effects of microstructure on the development of deformation zone will be discussed.

This month's topic of Material Science Education will give us an insight into the Materials Education in today's world. It is also Scholarship Recipient, Past Chair and awards night. Our speakers, John Rotella and Logan Kroneman, both PhD. Candidates at Purdue will spend time talking about Materials, why they chose Materials Engineering as a career path and their future. It will be a busy night with all of the Student Scholarship, Past Chairs and Awards to be honored, so make your reservation now. In addition we will vote on next year's officers. You may want to bring someone you know that may be considering Engineering (Materials) as a potential major in college and expose them to some of the education that Materials has to offer.
