Irving Langmuir - The Early Career of a Materials Engineer

Presenting: Dr. John McCoy, Professor, Materials & Metallurgical Engineering Department New Mexico Tech

Friday, April 20th 6:00pm

Irving Langmuir was awarded the 1932 Nobel Prize for his work on surface science. His later work with Katherine Blodgett on monolayer films is well known, and the journal Langmuir is named in his honor. In New Mexico, he is remembered for his studies on Cloud Seeding (in his B-17 Flying Fortress flown out of Socorro airport). These were important early studies of cloud physics and laid the foundation for the current field of “Geo-Engineering”. In the present seminar, the early career of Langmuir at GE will be summarized. It was during this period that he revolutionized the light bulb, saved the company from certain ruin, performed his Nobel Prize winning work, and established the paradigm for Industrial Research.
