Our Tuesday March 14th, 2017 Chapter Dinner Meeting:

Topic: Titanium in Medical and Dental Application

The advantages provided by Titanium in Medical and Dental Applications include the high strength, fracture resistance, good corrosion resistance and bio-compatibility, and the non-magnetic characteristics of Titanium . A number of  body implants fabricated from Titanium are presented, including dental uses. Titanium use in wheel chairs, walkers and walking sticks is then presented. This is followed by a discussion of the specifications for Titanium for implants and a summary of the mechanical properties of Titanium alloys suitable for implants, with emphasis on the Ti-6Al-4V alloy and commercially pure grades of Titanium. Discussion of other Titanium based alloys such as Nitinol (shape memory) is also presented for both body and dental applications.

Sam earned his Ph.D. in physical metallurgy at Sheffield University, England. He has spent more than 40 years working on all aspects of Titanium Science, Technology and Applications at Crucible Steel Company, the USAF Materials Laboratory and the University of Idaho. In retirement, he presents the ASM Titanium Short Course, works as a consultant to the titanium industry, and can be contacted at
