This course teaches the background and practical applications of vacuum furnace heat treating. The student will be introduced to the fundamentals of vacuum furnaces and related system components. A complete understanding of vacuum measurement and vacuum pumping systems needed to perform various vacuum heat treating processes will be reviewed. This course provides a practical understanding of vacuum technology as related to heat treating and is as a follow up to courses which cover the fundamental metallurgy of what happens when metals are heated and cooled. This course will include hands on instruction utilizing the new ASM Laboratory Vacuum Furnace and include examples of real world heat treating cycles.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, attendees can:

  • Name the advantages of vacuum heat treating compared to conventional atmospheric heat treating
  • List the basic types of vacuum furnaces
  • Explain how vacuum furnaces are insulated, heated, regulated, cooled, and evacuated
  • Explain the basics of operating a vacuum furnace
  • Explain the basic maintenance procedures to maintain a vacuum furnace
  • Discuss the advantages of vacuum heat treating compared to conventional atmospheric heat treating
  • Describe four surface treatments that make use of vacuum technology
  • Describe how vacuum furnaces are used in the heat treating of tool steels, stainless steels, Inconel® 718, titanium and its alloys
  • Be able to design a basic vacuum heat treat cycle for age hardening, solution annealing, and simple brazing.
