This course is designed to teach the basic and advanced metallographic techniques that will reveal the true microstructural characteristics of a wide range of materials. The theory and understanding of the proper selection of abrasives, lubricants, equipment, polishing cloths/pads and a basic understanding of chemomechanical polishing will be discussed. The course covers the preparation methods of most metals and alloys, composites, hard metals, ceramics and coatings.

Students are strongly encouraged to bring samples to class.

ASM Handbook Volume 9 is included when taking this course.

REQUIRED PRE-REQUISITES

Prior metallographic experience

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Properly section, mount and metallographically prepare a wide range of material types
  • Select proper etching solutions that will reveal various characteristics of microstructures in a wide range of materials
  • Evaluate and document characteristics of the materials prepared using image capture and measuring systems
     

3.0 CEU's will be awarded for successful completion of the course requirements.
