Abstract

Failure analysis can at times be done with a brief examination depending on the nature of the failure and the level of background information available. On the other hand, some situations required the use of the many tools available for failure analysis such as stereoscopic examination, optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis.

This talk will cover examples of failure analysis in chemical and ethanol plants, semiconductor manufacturing, and infrastructure.

Biography

Mike Blum was born in South Africa and graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg with a BSc in Metallurgical Engineering. He later completed an MSc in Corrosion Engineering at the University of London in the UK.

Mike is the founder of Materials Technology Associates Inc., a California company specializing in failure analysis, and corrosion testing. He also co-founded Servicios Metalúrgicos, a company that provides materials engineering and failure analysis services to Mexican industry. Formerly, Mike managed the failure analysis and corrosion laboratories of FMC Corp in Santa Clara. He also worked in materials engineering and quality assurance for international companies such as Babcock and Wilcox in Mexico, International Nickel in England and Imperial Chemical Industries in South Africa and Canada.

ThermoFisher's Thermoscientific Division provides innovative analytical instruments, lab equipment and specialty diagnostics that provide rapid and accurate results for customers in research, clinical and applied markets.
More specifically, the Thermo Scientific™ UltraDry™ line of EDS detectors provide world class speed and resolution for failure analysis.  Since the first Silicon Drift-based EDS detector (SDD) was commercially introduced roughly 15 years ago, X-ray detectors for energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) have undergone a wave of technology enhancements.
Thermo Scientific™ Pathfinder™ X-ray microanalysis for SEM/EDS and SEM/WDS avoids the many pitfalls found in traditional elemental-based X-ray microanalysis. Using Spectral Imaging data as its foundation along with an array of processing algorithms that assure the most precise data possible, Pathfinder software goes straight to the classification of the chemical phases in your sample. Useful information arrives in minutes, cleanly and without any analytical bias. Pathfinder software to changes the way you use EDS/EDX and WDS/WDX.
Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. is the world leader in serving science, with revenues of $18 billion and more than 55,000 employees globally.
