Failure analysis can at times be done with a brief examination depending on the nature of the failure and the level of background information available. On the other hand, some situations required the use of the many tools available for failure analysis such as stereoscopic examination, optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis.

This talk will cover examples of failure analysis in chemical and ethanol plants, semiconductor manufacturing, and infrastructure.


Mike Blum was born in South Africa and graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg with a BSc in Metallurgical Engineering. He later completed an MSc in Corrosion Engineering at the University of London in the UK.

Mike is the founder of Materials Technology Associates Inc., a California company specializing in failure analysis, and corrosion testing. He also co-founded Servicios Metalúrgicos, a company that provides materials engineering and failure analysis services to Mexican industry. Formerly, Mike managed the failure analysis and corrosion laboratories of FMC Corp in Santa Clara. He also worked in materials engineering and quality assurance for international companies such as Babcock and Wilcox in Mexico, International Nickel in England and Imperial Chemical Industries in South Africa and Canada.
