  1. the History of Moffett Field and NASA Ames from the 1930’s to the present, John Mascali, current Director of the Moffett Historical Society will recount the origins of this important Silicon Valley Landmark including a materials perspective. Starting from the construction of Hangar One which was installed to house the USS Macon (ZRS-5) – a 785 foot dirigible operated by the US Navy. Hangar One was built during the Depression using galvanized steel sheathed steel girders– and completed in 1933. It remains one of the largest unsupported structures in the country. The base was originally commissioned as NAS Sunnyvale, but was later renamed Moffett Field after the death of Rear Admiral William Moffett who was credited with the creation of this Bay Area airfield.
