Abstract

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is an optical-numerical measuring technique for determining shape (XYZ coordinates), displacement, and strain fields at the surface of an object under various loading conditions.  DIC is used in industries, such as aerospace, automotive, civil, biomedical, and micro-electronics.  Compare to traditional methods such as strain gage and LVDT, it is able to capture non-contact full field data with typical measurement of 10,000 plus data points. Coupled with high speed cameras, it is able slow down any event to capture dynamic response for applications such as impact, blast, and fracture mechanics.   In this talk, I will go over how DIC is being used for composite, pressure vessel, and human spine.  I will also show how we are able to leverage this full-field data set to extrapolate material properties using Virtual Fields Methods that is 100 times faster than Finite Element Updating (FEMU).

Biography

 Vinh Tran

Director of Business Development, MBC Dynamics

Vinh Tran has over 15 years of experience in the field of optical metrology.  He started his career working with structured light scanner for reverse engineering and quality inspection applications. Vinh spent the last 10 years helping customers across North America implementing the Digital Image Correlation technology for their experimental testing. He recently started MBC Dynamics to further expand the use of Digital Image Correlation beyond just a strain measurement tool and developing it into a common platform where material scientist, FEA modelers, and experimentalist can seamlessly collaborate together.  Vinh holds a BS in Optical Engineering from the University of California Davis.

Meeting Sponsor

We are proud to have the sponsorship of

Exponent Laboratories

Exponent is a multi-disciplinary engineering and scientific consulting firm that brings together more than 90 different disciplines to solve engineering, science, regulatory, and business issues facing our clients.

Exponent has a full-time staff of over 900 located in 25 international offices. Exponent’s multidisciplinary organization of engineers, scientists, physicians and business consultants, addresses complicated issues facing industry and government today. The firm’s consultants provide product design analysis, development, and testing; analyze failures and accidents to determine their cause and prevent their recurrence; and evaluate environmental and human health concerns to find cost-effective solutions. Exponent is certified to ISO 9001 and is authorized by the General Services Administration (GSA) to provide professional engineering services.

Awards Night

This is the meeting where we recognize those ASMI members in our area who have reached a milestone year in their membership.  Certificates will be provided as a thank  you for members attending this meeting.
