Kim Engineering Building, College Park , MD , US
Join us for networking, a delicious dinner, and a fascinating talk! Our speaker is Dr. Gilad Kusne, National Institute of Standards and Technology who will be talking about the emerging science and practices for machine learning in materials science.
May 09, 2018 | UMD Golf Course, 3800 Golf Course Road
College Park , MD , Country
Dr. Ellen Cerreta, ASM Trustee, presented an overview of the tools utilized to advance predictive models for damage and failure in extreme environments as well as the work to design next generation materials for enhanced properties, particularly damage tolerance. Both students and professionals very much enjoyed the presentation.
April 18, 2018 | Tortilla Coast (Capitol Hill) and the National Air & Space Museum
Washington , DC , United States
Material Advantage, the student program for materials science and engineering, sponsored Congressional Visit Days to bring students from across the country to Washington DC to raise visibility and support for science, engineering and technology. The Chapter invited the students to share their experiences on Capitol Hill and to network with each other and our local members. We reserved a private room for dinner and networking at Tortilla Coast. We also arranged tickets for a lecture and stargazing at the National Air and Space Museum. Both students and our local members attended all three events.
October 18 - October 19, 2017 | Local Motors at National Harbor, at 151 St George Blvd. National Harbor, MD 20745
National Harbor , MD , US
Members met for a guided tour of Local Motors, an American vehicle manufacturing company focused on low volume manufacturing of open-source vehicle designs using multiple microfactories. We saw Strati, the world's first 3-D printed car and the large scale printers co-developed with Oak Ridge National Labs. We adjourned for a group dinner at nearby Thai Pavilion.
September 26, 2017 | Kay Boardrooms (Rooms 1107 and 1111) in the Jeong H. Kim Engineering Building, University of Maryland, College Park
College Park , Maryland , US
Dr. Dale Newbury provided a look back as well as forward for a core technology of materials science. Electron-excited Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS) for Accurate, Precise and Sensitive Elemental Microanalysis, and So Can You! 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of semiconductor-based energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) on an electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA). EDS was quickly combined with the scanning electron microscope (SEM) to make X-ray microanalysis a widely available elemental characterization method with applications in the physical and biological sciences, technology, failure analysis, and forensic science.
April 05, 2017 | Nationals Park
Washington , DC , United States
Material Advantage, the student program for materials science and engineering, sponsored Congressional Visit Days to bring students from across the country to Washington DC to raise visibility and support for science, engineering and technology. The Washington DC Chapter of ASM invited the students to share their experiences on Capitol Hill and to network with each other and our local members. We reserved block of tickets to see the Washington Nationals and the Miami Marlins face off at Nationals Park.
