AML3D joins AUD $3.9M advanced aerospace manufacturing project

AML3D Limited, Australia, is participating in a three-year advanced aerospace manufacturing research and development project supported by a range of industry and research partners, including an aerospace prime. The aerospace prime is a global aviation contractor, which manages the overall design, development, and manufacturing of large-scale aerospace systems, including aircraft. In total, the R&D project participants will provide approximately A$3.89 million to run the R&D project over the three-year term.

The objective of the R&D project is to develop and mature AML3D’s Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing (“WAM”) technology and processes to a level suitable for qualified Aerospace tooling production applications.

AML3D’s contribution to the R&D project is expected to be approximately AUD $530,000, comprising approximately AUD $130,000 in cash and AUD $400,000 in staff and other in-kind contributions over the project term. The R&D project is consistent with AML3D’s strategy of developing and industrializing its WAM technology for advanced manufacturing applications.

Participation in the R&D project is not expected to generate revenue for AML3D, however, a successful conclusion to the R&D project will position the company as a potential Aerospace tooling production supplier. As such, AML3D could pursue future purchase orders or production contracts under separate commercial agreements, creating a pathway to new revenue opportunities in the high-value Aerospace tooling sector.

AML3D CEO Sean Ebert said “This $3.89 million R&D project, with an aerospace prime, will build on AML3D’s track record demonstrating WAM technology can support the Aerospace sector. We have already achieved the AS9100D Aerospace Quality Management accreditation, the highest global quality standard for manufacturers supplying flight-ready structures. This new R&D project moves AML3D into a formal qualification pathway for WAM to be deployed for Aerospace tooling applications.”

“Tooling lead times of up to 24 months present a significant challenge across aerospace manufacturing. A successful conclusion to this R&D project has the potential to position AML3D as a solution to these Aerospace supply chain constraints. It is expected AML3D’s WAM technology will be shown to dramatically reduce Aerospace tooling component manufacturing lead times compared to traditional manufacturing techniques.”
