ASM International, Materials Park, Ohio, is proud to announce the donation of a new $250,000 lab-sized furnace, designed specifically for use at Materials Park, by Solar Atmospheres Inc., Souderton, Pa. The gift commemorating the ASM 100th Anniversary will better enable and further education efforts at ASM. The official dedication ceremony was held Saturday, July 20 with a ribbon cutting as part of the Annual Chapter Leadership Days and the ASM Materials Education Foundation’s Eisenman Materials Camp.
“The donation from Solar Atmospheres demonstrates their commitment to the materials community and life-long learning,” states Thom Passek, ASM International Managing Director. “We thank them for their extremely generous 100th year anniversary gift and support of our efforts at ASM. It is these types of partnerships that will help us fulfill our mission and insure that there is a sustainable and qualified workforce moving forward”
“The Mentor, as the vacuum furnace was appropriately named, will provide additional opportunities for high-quality, hands-on experiences for students at ASM,” said Norina Columbaro, Senior Manager of Education. “It will enhance our current and future educational offerings for the remainder of 2013 and beyond. Our students will benefit greatly from this dynamic technology.”
“This was certainly an exciting time for me. Seeing the furnace installed, all the fantastic comments from ASM and staff, was breathtaking,” said Roger Jones, corporate president of Solar Atmospheres. “It is truly an honor as I become President of the ASM Heat Treating Society in September, and have the opportunity to celebrate ASM International’s 100th Anniversary this October.”
“The Mentor” is a horizontal, internal quenching furnace with a hot zone that measures 12 in. wide × 12 in. high × 18 in. deep and is capable of operation to 2400oF. The hearth will accept a load of 250 lb. Featuring state-of-the-art vacuum furnace technology, this furnace will allow students to perform a wide variety of tests and experiments relating to vacuum heat treating, brazing and sintering processes. It will also give them a hands-on understanding of the value and advantages of using a vacuum over other heat treating equipment.
The vacuum furnace will accentuate the below education courses with appropriately designed activities:
Mechanical Testing of Metals held August 20-23, 2013: Learn more.
Steel Metallography held Sept. 23-27, 2013: Learn more.
Introduction to Heat Treating held November 11-13, 2013: Learn more.
Advanced Heat Treating held November 14-15, 2013: Learn more.
