Professional societies convene to discuss materials data infrastructure needs

More than a dozen professional societies were represented at a recent workshop, responding to a call to determine where and how organizations such as theirs can help in the development of the nation’s materials data infrastructure. Hosted by the CMD Network in coordination with the Subcommittee for the Materials Genome Initiative, the path-finding session identified several ways in which professional societies can leverage their strengths – developing standards, disseminating information, and organizing community-led efforts – to bring about an infrastructure that’s not only robust, but also sustainable. One way societies can lend their support is by establishing minimum standards for publishing scientific data. Other ways identified during the workshop include creating and maintaining data registries and organizing efforts to develop data quality standards.
