Dear IMS Members,
It is my honor to have been selected as the Education Committee Chair for the International Metallographic Society. I enjoy teaching the courses Metallographic Techniques (an IMS course) and Steel Metallography at ASM International Headquarters. There are many exciting developments in Education and it is my pleasure to share some of them with you. As part of my teaching, I agreed to work with ASM Education to develop videos for best practices in laboratory safety, microscopes and software, cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching. Access to these videos is included in this newsletter and is also included in many of our courses to enrich the student experience. More videos will become available in the next few months. We also have forums that are used prior to the class to connect the students to each other and with the Instructor. We discuss expectations for class, our experience, and students are able to ask questions to help them in their jobs.
The IMS Board endorsed the Certificate of Achievement in Metallography which offers three tracks of learning: Metallography (Metallurgy Fundamentals and Specimen Preparation), Intermediate Metallography (Microstructural Interpretation) and Advanced Metallography (Analytical Techniques).
We are looking to expand your learning opportunities with new courses as well. In the next few months, the IMS Education Committee will be sending out a survey to get your feedback on the topics you are looking for in education.
Thank you,
Laura Moyer
