Prior to immigrating to the U.S., Dr. Yang was a recipient of the Chinese Academy of Sciences top-ranked presidential award and natural science research award. The products he designed and managed at Hysitron, including the nanoTensile 5000 and 3D OmniProbe, won the 2007 Micro/Nano 25 Award and 2005 Nano 50 Award, respectively. In addition, Dr. Yang has authored or co-authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications on nanoscience and nanotechnology, tribology and surface science, and other engineering-related topics. He is an inventor or co-inventor of seven issued U.S. utility patents and has given more than 20 invited talks at research institutions and scientific conferences.

Dr. Yang, an enthusiastic promoter of science and technology and an active societal contributor, has held leadership roles and memberships at various technical professional societies including ASM International, ASME, MRS, STLE, TMS, and the Minnesota Microscopy Society. He is currently a member of the ASM Handbook Committee, a member and past chair of the ASM Technical Book Committee, and a board member and past chair of the Minnesota Chapter of ASM. He is the chairman of the Twin Cities Section of STLE and a technical editor for Tribology & Lubrication Technology, a magazine published by the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE). He has also served numerous times as a U.S. National Science Foundation grant review panelist, journal referee, and international conference organizer and session chair. He was a characterization editor of SurFACTS in Biomaterials, a newsletter published by the Surfaces in Biomaterials Foundation.

Since 2015, his contributions to ASM publications as a Technical Books Committee member and past chair include reviewing technical book proposals and providing inputs for technical publication ideas and plans. He has received volunteer bonus awards five years in a row for his excellent participation in committee activities.
