Mr. Brett Miller is the Technical Director in charge of metallurgical failure analysis at IMR Test Labs —Louisville, a subsidiary of Curtiss-Wright Surface Technologies. IMR Test Labs is an independent materials testing company. He has performed thousands of industrial failure analyses for diverse clients including those in aerospace, refinery, power generation, pipeline, transportation, and litigation. In addition, Mr. Miller takes a leading role in training new failure analysts and material scientists. To complement his in-house training work, he has taught ASM International failure analysis courses and other metallurgical content at local, national and international levels. He is a licensed professional engineer in Kentucky and Wisconsin, as well as an American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector (CWI). He is a Fellow of ASM International (FASM) and a Curtiss-Wright Technical Fellow.
Acting as the author or editor of numerous failure analysis publications including technical papers, journal articles, book chapters, and technical books, Mr. Miller was most recently a volume co-editor, division editor, contributing author, and peer reviewer for the new ASM Handbook, Volume 11, Failure Analysis and Prevention, and the upcoming Volume 11A, Analysis and Prevention of Component and Equipment Failures.
He was the editor of the third edition of Donald Wulpi’s highly regarded text; Understanding How Components Fail, collecting a wide assortment of experts to update this popular reference. He acted as a contributor and author for the 2002 edition of ASM Handbook, Volume 11, Failure Analysis and Prevention, and also acts as an Editorial Review Board Member and peer reviewer for the Journal of Failure Analysis and Prevention (JFAP).
Active in the ASM Failure Analysis Society (FAS) and the failure analysis committee in the years prior to the establishment of FAS, Mr. Miller is currently a board member of FAS and on several active subcommittees. In the prior failure analysis committee, he held the offices of both chair and vice chair and has participated in planning and orchestrating annual failure analysis symposia for over 20 years.
Mr. Miller has given several dozen conference symposia and local meeting presentations and has been a guest lecturer on failure analysis at the University of Kentucky. As part of the Failure Analysis Society, he led the effort to redevelop a components failure analysis seminar, in addition to assisting in the periodic review of teaching materials from several other ASM courses.
Except for times when no local chapter was available, Mr. Miller has been active on the local level since 1985. He has been both the chair and vice chair of the Bluegrass Chapter of ASM International.
Mr. Miller holds a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology and a Master’s degree in materials engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
