ORNL microscopy uncovers “dancing” silicon atoms in graphene

Jumping silicon atoms are the stars of an atomic scale ballet featured in a new Nature Communications study from the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tenn. The ORNL research team documented the atoms’ unique behavior by first trapping groups of silicon atoms, known as clusters, in a single-atom-thick sheet of carbon called graphene.

Resistive memory based on zinc-oxide/silicon has higher speed, greater storage capacity

A team at the University of California, Riverside, has developed a novel way to build a zinc oxide nano-island on silicon. It eliminates the need for a second element called a selector, which is often a diode. The device is based on the principles of resistive memory, which can be used to create memory cells that are smaller, operate at a higher speed, and offer more storage capacity than flash memory cells, the current industry standard.
