For HSB Stockholm’s architectural competition 2023, three teams of architects produced innovative proposals for private residences of the future at three different locations in the center of Stockholm.   Berg | C.F. Møller Architects are working in partnership with architects Dinell Johansson and consultants Tyréns on their entry. The team chose to build upwards, and has designed a 34-story residential building, which will be seen for miles.

Century Aluminum acquires Sebree smelter

Century Aluminum Co., Chicago Ill., announces that its wholly owned subsidiary has completed the transaction with Rio Tinto Alcan Inc. to acquire substantially all of the assets of the Sebree aluminum smelter. The Sebree smelter, located in Henderson County, Kentucky, has an annual production capacity of 205,000 metric tons of primary aluminum. Century Aluminum Company owns primary aluminum capacity in the United States and Iceland.

Universal batch intensive quenching furnace produces strong martensite case

AFC-Holcroft, Wixom, Mich., offers its Universal Batch Intensive Quenching (UBIQ) furnace, developed for the growing IntensiQuench market. Intensive quenching is a very rapid and uniform cooling of steel parts that causes the simultaneous formation of martensite throughout the whole part surface, creating a firm shell. Using 3D to make materials stronger

Aided by funding from NASA and using methods similar to 3D printing, researchers at Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla, are running computer simulations of processes that could lead to stronger, more durable materials for the space agency. The researchers plan to fabricate some of these new materials soon, says Frank Liou, director of the Laser Aided Manufacturing Process (LAMP) Laboratory and the Michael and Joyce Bytnar professor of product innovation and creativity.

Optomec launches low-cost 3D printer for metal additive manufacturing

Optomec Inc., Albuquerque, N.M., launches a low cost metal 3D printer named the LENS 450. The system was developed specifically in response to growing industry interest in 3D printing of metals, including the need to train a new generation of workers in metal additive manufacturing technology. The first delivery will be to the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Material Science at the University of Pittsburgh, where it will be used in its new Advanced Manufacturing education program.
