HT Microstructures & Performance of Carbon & Alloy Steels

Heat treated bar and forging steels remain the major material for parts (such as shafts, gears, bearing, fasteners, oil country tubulars, aircraft landing gear, tools of all sorts, and many other applications) manufactured for demanding applications that require high or ultra-high strength, high fatigue resistance, and /or high wear resistance, all combined with good levels of toughness and fracture resistance. This course will review the phases that form in carbon and alloy steels and the modifications produced in the iron-carbon diagram by alloying and manufacture. Microstructures and the phase transformations by which they are produced in all phases of manufacture, from casting through quench and tempering, will be described and related to mechanical properties and performance, including fracture and potential embrittlement phenomena.

Refractory Technology

Modern society is highly dependent on thermal processing for manufacturing, materials production and processing, and energy production. Although relatively unknown to the general public, refractory materials enable heat processing to occur. The extraction, production, and processing of metals, petrochemical production, ceramic production, glass production, and a huge variety of other heat processes are dependent on refractories. This course gives an in-depth view of modern refractory technology, materials, and their application in various industries.

Vacuum Heat Treating

This course provides the background and practical applications of vacuum furnace heat treating. You will be introduced to the fundamentals of vacuum furnaces and related system components. A complete understanding of vacuum measurement and vacuum pumping systems is needed to perform various vacuum heat treating processes and will be reviewed. You will leave with a practical understanding of vacuum technology as related to heat treating and it is a follow up to courses that cover the fundamental metallurgy of what happens when metals are heated and cooled. This course will include hands-on instruction utilizing the ASM Laboratory Vacuum Furnace and include examples of real-world heat treating cycles.
