SSAB, Stockholm, announces that Rautaruukki became part of SSAB on July 29, 2014. Together, the two create a Nordic and U.S.-based steel company that is a leading producer on the global market for advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) and quenched & tempered steels (Q&T), standard strip, plate, and tubular products, as well as construction solutions.
The preliminary combined net sales for the companies during 2013 amounts to approximately SEK 56 billion (EUR 6.4 billion), and SSAB and Rautaruukki combined have around 17,300 employees. The company has an annual steel production capacity of 8.8 million metric tons.
The merger of SSAB and Ruukki creates a global steel company that offers value-added products and services developed in close cooperation with its customers. The new company has five divisions: SSAB Special Steels –advanced high-strength steels and quenched and tempered steels; SSAB Europe –Nordic-based steel producer of high quality strip, heavy plate and tubes; SSAB Americas –North America-based steel producer of high quality heavy plate; Tibnor –Nordic full-service steel distribution partner; and Ruukki Construction –European provider of energy-efficient building and construction solutions.

Bosio commissions 72-foot pit furnaces for heat treatment of turbine rotors
July 16, 2014

Aichelin Group, Austria, announces that member company Bosio, Slovenia, has commissioned a 72-foot pit furnace, a 72-foot split type furnace, and a PLC-controlled spray quenching unit of the same size for the heat treatment of turbine rotors with a length up to 52 feet and a rotor weight up to 175 tons. The furnaces are available with gas or electric heating for temperatures up to 2000°F. Different heating zones ensure a temperature uniformity of ± 9°F.
The PLC controlled spray quenching unit can adjust the quench speed by shutting on/off selected zones and switching between the quenching medias water, air, or air-water mixture. For better uniformity, the parts can be rotated during quenching. A wireless transmitter ensures real-time temperature measurement during the rotation.
For interested customers, Bosio can also provide a simulation of the cooling process for a specific application.
All plants built by the companies of the Aichelin Group ensure a very energy-efficient and environmentally friendly operation with consistently excellent product quality and reproducibility.
This furnace technology is now also available in the United States, and will be built by the U.S.-based Aichelin Heat Treatment Systems Inc., Plymouth, Mich.

Ipsen, Cherry Valley, Ill., recently shipped more than 15 vacuum furnaces to customers around the world for a diverse range of applications and industries. Of these recent shipments, several were sent to international customers in Singapore, Japan, China, Hungary, Vietnam and Russia; the remaining furnaces were delivered to sites within the United States. These vacuum furnaces were for the aerospace, automotive, energy, commercial heat treating, and surface engineering industries, to name a few.
This continues Ipsen's long-standing tradition of supporting global growth by engineering thermal processing systems that sustain complex recipes and produce components from simple tools to giant wind turbine gears. The equipment models shipped out included horizontal MetalMaster furnaces, Titan furnaces, horizontal and vertical TurboTreater furnaces, and Titan DS furnaces.
Ipsen delivers custom-built solutions that allow customers to tailor features to their exact specifications. These features include: horizontal or vertical configurations, manual or automatic loading systems, custom load size/configurations, high pressure gas quenching and/or control systems to support any applicable industry requirements. Customers can also take advantage of Ipsen's Global Support Team; they facilitate on-site installation, expert training and start-up assistance from the moment of delivery through the entire life span of your equipment.
In addition, Ipsen also offers customers the opportunity to either send employees to an Ipsen U training or schedule one at their facility, during which they can ask questions about specific equipment and processes, as well as receive hands-on instruction.

Beralcast beryllium-aluminum alloys under consideration for F-35 Lightning II optical components
December 4, 2013

IBC Advanced Alloys Corp., Wilmington, Mass., reports that its wholly owned U.S. subsidiary, IBC Engineered Materials Corp., is working directly with Lockheed Martin to develop specific investment-cast optical components on the F-35 Lightning II aircraft to demonstrate the technical and commercial viability of Beralcast beryllium-aluminum alloys. Beralcast principal alloys are more than three times stiffer than aluminum, with 22% less weight. They can be precision cast for simple and complex three-dimensional stability. These high modulus alloys are ideal for high-performance industrial and high-tech components, as well as for a wide range of aerospace applications.
This collaboration enables IBC to demonstrate its expertise and industry leadership in offering rapid prototyping and advanced materials solutions to provide investment cast parts to aerospace customers with short lead times and competitive pricing.
"IBC Engineered Materials is excited to be collaborating with Lockheed Martin and believe we will demonstrate the viability of our Beralcast alloys and cast components as mechanically compliant and cost effective components for the F-35 Lightning II program," said Ray White, President of IB-EMC. "We hope that IBC's partnership and collaboration with Lockheed Martin will advance the potential for our engineered materials products for other aerospace industry initiatives where modulus, weight, and cost are important design criteria."
