Sandvik opens ultrasonic testing facility for pipes in the oil and gas industry
October 13, 2016
Source:
Sandvik Materials Technology, Sweden, has inaugurated a new state-of-the-art, fully automated ultrasonic testing facility for pipes in the oil and gas industry. "The new facility puts Sandvik in a world-leading position as a manufacturer of OCTG (Oil Country Tubular Goods)," said Per Olsson Artberger, Sandvik Global Product Manager for OCTG.
"This major investment is a substantial achievement for all involved, and a milestone in Sandvik's enhanced strategic focus on demanding applications within oil and gas such as OCTG (Oil Country Tubular Goods)," said Per Olsson Artberger, Sandvik Global Product Manager for OCTG.
"This ultrasonic testing facility will increase our capabilities and capacity significantly. Despite the downturn in the oil and gas market, we see continued good business opportunities for Sandvik material grades, especially in the Middle East and Caspian Sea regions.
"The new, automated facility provides us with much speedier throughput and greatly enhanced testing capabilities, and puts Sandvik in a world leading position as a manufacturer of OCTG."
The energy sector, including oil and gas, is a key strategic focus for Sandvik. Ultrasonic testing was the limiting factor in achieving maximum output with the existing facility. To solve this, Sandvik invested in both capacity and state-of-the-art technology to meet the industry's toughest requirements for defect detection.
Per Olsson Artberger added: "It also builds on the strategic alliance between Sandvik and Tenaris on the exclusive joint supply of corrosion resistant alloy OCTG materials and technology to the oil and gas sector. We now meet the industry's most exacting standards, and can exceed customer requirements."
Work commenced on the test facility in August 2015, with commissioning and site acceptance testing prior to the inauguration.

Nucor to acquire steel plate mill in Texas
July 27, 2016
Source:
Nucor Corp., Charlotte, N.C., has agreed to acquire the Joy Global steel plate mill in Longview, Texas, for approximately $29 million. The mill produces carbon and alloy steel plate products with heat-treating capabilities, and has an annual capacity of 180,000 tons. The mill produces specialty plate products with the capability of producing plate that can range from 1 to 12 inches thick and up to 138 inches wide.
"This acquisition builds on our strategy to capture a growing share of higher value-added plate products, and complements the capabilities of our two existing plate mills," said John Ferriola, Chairman, CEO, and President of Nucor. "The Longview mill will serve as a valuable addition to Nucor's plate products, which we believe can be further leveraged by our Nucor commercial team."
Nucor's existing plate mills are in North Carolina and Alabama, and have a combined capacity of 2.9 million tons per year. Nucor's existing mills produce plate for manufacturers of barges, bridges, heavy equipment, rail cars, refinery tanks, ships, wind towers, armor, and other markets. Nucor plate products are also used in the pipe and tube, pressure vessel, transportation and construction industries.
Nucor and its affiliates are manufacturers of steel products, with operating facilities primarily in the United States and Canada. Products include carbon and alloy steel as bars, beams, sheet, and plate; steel pilings; steel joists and joist girders; steel decks; fabricated concrete reinforcing steel; cold-finished steel; steel fasteners; metal building systems; steel grating; and wire and wire mesh. Nucor, through the David J. Joseph Company, also brokers ferrous and nonferrous metals, pig iron and HBI/DRI; supplies ferro-alloys; and processes ferrous and nonferrous scrap. Nucor is North America's largest recycler.

Olympus portable digital ultrasonic flaw detector has full-screen A-scan mode
May 27, 2015
Source:
Olympus Scientific Solutions Americas Inc., Waltham, Mass., introduces the Epoch 650 digital ultrasonic flaw detector that combines conventional ultrasonic flaw detection capabilities with the efficiency of a highly portable, intuitive instrument. Its user interface is appropriate for both novice and experienced users, and its portability and rugged ergonomic design allow convenient operation in nearly any inspection environment.
Available in two hardware configurations, the compact Epoch 650 offers the choice to adjust parameters with a knob or with a navigation area on the keypad. The large, color, transflective VGA display is complemented by a full screen A-scan mode, providing a vivid A-scan representation in both low light and bright sunlight conditions.
Its patented digital High Dynamic Range receiver meets the requirements of EN12668-1:2010, and the instrument allows a full range of standard and optional flaw detection features. Key standard flaw detection features include 400V PerfectSquare tunable square wave pulser, up to 30 digital filters for enhanced signal-to-noise ratio, and flexible reporting capabilities direct to removable memory. Optional application-specific software programs include an Interface tracking gate, Backwall Echo Attenuator (BEA), API 5UE, and Waveform Averaging.
It also features an optional Corrosion Module mode, which combines the ease of use and measurement precision of a dedicated corrosion thickness gage with the full functionality of a standard flaw detector. This mode includes an encoded B-scan function.
Weighing only 1.6 kg (3.5 lb.), the rugged case is built to withstand the rigors of very harsh and hazardous inspection environments. The navigation pad configuration is designed to meet IP67 requirements for very wet or dusty conditions, while the knob configuration is designed to meet IP66 requirements. The instrument, with its rubber bumpers on all corners, is tested to high reliability standards for drops, shocks, vibration, and explosive atmosphere. And with a battery life between 15 and 16 hours, the Epoch 650 is the perfect solution for remote and difficult-to-access inspection locations.

SSAB launches steel tube family with extreme wear resistance
March 11, 2015
Source:
SSAB Steel, Sweden, has launched the new Hardox Tube 500 family, which provides the same hardness and toughness as Hardox wear plate, but in tubular form. It was developed for applications that require high wear resistance in combination with lower density. It is suitable for transporting all types of abrasive materials, such as wet concrete, soil, gravel, and ore slurry.
"The new Hardox Tube 500 range completes the existing Hardox family product range. We have long experience in developing wear-resistant steel tubes. The final properties are set after tube rolling and welding, which guarantees consistency as well as high hardness and toughness qualities," says Fredrik Mikaelsson, Manager for Tubes & Sections at SSAB.
Its extreme wear resistance allows for a lighter product with a long service life. It can increase the competitiveness of certain products by extending their service life by two, five, ten times, or more.
Hardox Tube 500 is available from stock in 88.9-133 mm diameters and different material thicknesses. Custom tubes in thinner materials and other diameters are also available.
