Mesocoat completes field testing of molten-metal-resistant nanocomposite coating

Source:

Abakan Inc., Miami, announces that its portfolio company Mesocoat Inc., Euclid, Ohio, has completed initial field testing of PComP M, its proprietary thermal-spray nanocomposite coating.  Mesocoat worked with a leading steel producer on full-size production equipment to test the coating's corrosion resistance in molten metal.  In over 3000 hours of simulated testing, PComP M coatings extended useful component life by 6 to 10 times compared to the current state of the art coatings under similar test environments.

The specific goal was to validate component life extension on zinc pot rolls used extensively in the continuous hot-dip galvanizing process, as well as other components used in the handling and processing of molten metals.

"Compared to conventional materials, PComP  M has demonstrated vastly improved molten metal corrosion resistance, combined with increased durability and reliability in the environment of rapidly changing temperatures during molten metal contact," stated MesoCoat CEO Stephen C. Goss.

"There are approximately 80 hot-dip coating (galvanizing and aluminizing) lines operational in the United States, and about half of these lines use coated rolls, with an average of six pot rolls in each galvanizing line. Each pot roll lasts an average of 2-4 weeks in the challenging high-temperature molten metal environment, before it must be replaced," says Mr. Goss.

Based on this data and the current cost of coating pot rolls, the overall market for pot roll coatings just for the galvanizing and aluminizing lines is more than $100 million annually in the United States,  and approximately $500 million globally. Additionally, more than 15% of galvanizing lines in the United States are located within 100 miles of Abakan's PComP thermal spray coating material production facility in Euclid, Ohio.

Siemens builds vacuum oxygen decarburization plant at Voestalpine Giesserei

Source:

Siemens Metals Technologies, Austria, has completed a vacuum oxygen decarburization (VOD) plant with a capacity of 50 metric tons at Voestalpine Giesserei Linz GmbH. The Austrian company is thereby adding to its equipment for secondary metallurgical treatment of steel castings for sophisticated applications in the energy and mechanical engineering industries. The plant features electrically driven mechanical vacuum pumps instead of steam injectors and therefore does not require a steam generator.

Siemens handled the configuration and supplied all the core components. These included, for example, a special ladle hood made of copper-plated sheet. This minimizes the occurrence of baked slag on the upper edge of the ladle and on the vacuum lid. The scope of supply also included the vacuum lid, an oxygen-blowing lance system, a gas cooler and a filter system, mechanical vacuum pumps and the hydraulic system. The order also included a water management system matched to the overall plant as well as the complete automation technology and instrumentation.

As one of the first VOD systems worldwide, the plant in Linz uses a combination of electrically driven, mechanical vacuum pumps to generate a vacuum. This includes roots blowers and screw compressors. Unlike the conventional steam injectors used in secondary metallurgy, these do not require any process steam, so there is no need for any external steam or the installation of a separate boiler to generate steam.
