OSTP officials call for more data sharing

In a recent White House blog, Cyrus Wadia and Michael Stebbins, Assistant Directors with the Office of Science and Technology Policy, said that the Obama Administration is stepping up efforts to increase the availability of materials data in support of the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI) and in the interests of U.S. competitiveness and growth.

Ensuring open access to data is one the main objectives of the MGI, and as the blog points out, we are beginning to see progress toward that end. Most notable is the cooperation among government agencies and OSTP on a plan that will require researchers to share the results of Federally-funded work. Over the course of the coming year, the agencies will continue in that direction while also working to meet anticipated demands for data storage and services.
