CarTech titanium powder for additive manufacturing shows reusability, high strength

Carpenter Technology Corp., Philadelphia, announces that its Carpenter Powder Products business has recently released new data from testing of its CarTech Puris 5+ titanium powder, showing that it exceeds the standard Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 strength levels by nearly 18%.

Developed specifically for additive manufacturing, CarTech Puris 5+ titanium powder is a custom composition of Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 that maintains high strength with lower oxygen content, providing maximum reusability.

Manufacturers typically seek to balance the oxygen levels needed to achieve the desired strength properties, with the increases in oxygen levels inherent in some additive-manufacturing processes. In laser-melt and e-beam direct-melt 3D printing, oxygen content increases with each recycle of excess powder from the build box. By starting with CarTech Puris 5+ titanium powder, customers can manage this balance of oxygen and strength better throughout the lifecycle of the titanium powder.

The powder is screened, under argon cover if desired, to customer requirements. Plasma arc melting (PAM) is used to produce extra-low interstitial (ELI) grades of titanium alloys at any mesh size, including Grade 5 and Grade 23 chemistries. ISO 9001- and AS 9100-certified procedures ensure the traceability of the raw material and heat lot from which powder originates.

“Recent collaborative work with CalRAM (Camarillo, Calif.) on electron beam melting machines has been very promising and results are exceeding customer expectations,” says Mike Murtagh, PhD, Chief Technology Officer. “Furthermore, CarTech Puris 5+ remains within the Grade 5 specification, which enables a seamless transition.”
