Allegheny to produce differentiated continuous nickel-base alloy sheet to repair oil pipeline

Allegheny Technologies Inc., Pittsburgh, has been selected to supply the nickel-base alloy rolled product needed  to repair a large oil pipeline break in an unnamed foreign country. ATI’s Harrison (Pennsylvania) mill is said to be the only mill in the world that can produce the rolled nickel-based alloy sheet in a timely fashion. The company recently spent more than a billion dollars to build its state-of-the-art hot-rolling facility.

“This oil pipeline repair project required an immediate replacement,” says Bob Wetherbee, Executive Vice President, ATI Flat Rolled Products Group. “The customer selected our innovative solution that is enabled by the capabilities of our hot-rolling and processing facility (HRPF), which features the industry’s shortest production cycle time for nickel-base alloy flat-rolled products.

“In addition, we offered a highly competitive solution for our customer through the use of our differentiated continuous coil, which replaces discrete plate in this application. This differentiated product is made possible by the unparalleled reduction power and gauge control of the HRPF.”

ATI produces nickel-base alloys and superalloys, titanium alloys, specialty alloys, stainless steels, and zirconium and other related alloys in many mill product forms. The company is also said to be a leader in producing powders of nickel-base and titanium-base alloys.

Shipments are expected to begin in the first quarter 2018.  The project’s estimated revenue value to the ATI Flat Rolled Products segment is $30 million.
