H.C. Starck’s C-103 niobium alloy designed for parts with high strength at high temperatures

H.C. Starck, Newton, Mass., announces that its Fabricated Products Division has successfully launched its niobium C-103 alloy for rocket, satellite, and jet propulsion applications. The alloy contains niobium, hafnium, and titanium (Nb-10Hf-1Ti), and provides the high strength required to handle extreme temperatures.

It functions at high temperatures up to 2700°F, making it suitable for high-performance rocket nozzle applications for space exploration. The alloy also resists high-frequency vibrations at the cryogenic temperatures in many satellite applications, because of its low ductile-to-brittle transition temperature. It is formable after TIG welding, has excellent fabricability, and is readily weldable.

H.C. Starck collaborates with customers to fabricate and machine components for aerospace, including build-to-print and design of niobium C-103 alloy components. The alloy meets ASTM B652, B653, B654, AMS7852 and AMS7857 specification.

In addition, C-103 niobium alloy powders are available for additive manufacturing applications in both flake and spherical morphologies.
