The presentation demonstrates how electromagnetic induction is utilized in various heating processes. It introduces general physical phenomena fundamental to induction heating (e.g. Joule heating; electromagnetic skin, proximity, and end effect; and conduction, convection, and radiation heat transfer).
Leveraging these fundamental concepts, the advantages of induction heating relative to alternative heating methods are also discussed. Processing characteristics and physical subtleties associated with different induction heating applications are presented. These applications include continuous billet heating, selective heating (e.g. for localized extrusion or upsetting), and preheating for lubricant coating. They are discussed using practical case studies and electromagnetic-thermal computer simulation. The value of computer simulation in the design of equipment, selection of process parameters, and assurance of quality is emphasized throughout.
