The graph shows thermogravimetric uptake curves for nitriding of AISI 316 at 445°C (830°F) in different NH3-H2 gas mixtures. Nitriding potentials are indicated in the figure. The nitrogen uptake as a function of time for the various nitriding potentials is depicted.
Clearly, the applied nitriding potential plays a major role on the growth rate of nitrogen uptake in the solid state, because nitrogen uptake increases with nitriding potential (nitrogen activity).
