Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC), Durham, N.C., is establishing a new $300 million initiative to create a smart, autonomous, safe, connected, efficient, and affordable future through focused, long-term research that goes beyond traditional scaling. The unified New Science Team (NST) effort will consist of two complementary research programs: JUMP (Joint University Microelectronics Program); and nCORE (nanoelectronics Computing Research).
The NST project, consisting of both the JUMP and nCORE programs, is a five-year research project focused on co-optimized hardware/software solutions for high-performance, energy-efficient microelectronics. SRC is actively recruiting a diverse group of electronics companies to participate in the NST project that will launch on January 1, 2018.
Research for both JUMP and nCORE will commence in January 2018 and continue for five years, with funding support from industry and government partners. Current industry partners are IBM Corp., Northrop Grumman Corp., Micron Technology Inc., Intel Corp., EMD Performance Materials (a Merck KGaA affiliate), Analog Devices Inc., Raytheon Company, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd., Lockheed Martin Corp., and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.
U.S. government partners currently committed to the effort include Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for the JUMP program; and the National Science Foundation (NSF) and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for the nCORE program.
SRC is currently recruiting additional industry and government sponsors to fortify the research agenda.
