REMADE Institute to select project proposals for recovery, reuse, recycling

The Sustainable Manufacturing Innovation Alliance (SMIA), led by the Rochester Institute of Technology, has been selected to lead the REMADE Institute, where REMADE stands for “Reducing Embodied-energy And Decreasing Emissions” in materials manufacturing. REMADE is now soliciting and will select project proposals that develop state-of-the-art technologies that enable U.S. manufacturers to increase the recovery, reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling of metals, polymers, fibers, and e-waste, and advance the goals of the Institute.

The total investment will be approximately $24 million with 50% in REMADE funding and 50% awardee cost-share. The REMADE Institute is one of 13 national research consortiums that comprise the “Manufacturing USA” federal initiative.

Nabil Nasr, associate provost and director of RIT’s Golisano Institute for Sustainability, will serve as chairman and chief executive officer of SMIA and the REMADE initiative. Mr. Nasr will lead this consortium consisting of 26 universities, 44 companies, seven national labs, and 26 industry trade associations and foundations. The SMIA headquarters will be located in the Rochester region in a facility yet to be determined.

The Institute will be organized as a set of technology nodes and “testbeds,” or labs that will support the nodes, with expertise pulled in from consortium partners. RIT will lead the Remanufacturing and Reuse “node” and two of the institute’s testbeds.

The five designated technology nodes will be:

Systems Analysis and Integration

Design for Reuse/Disassembly

Manufacturing Material Optimization

Remanufacturing and Reuse

Recycling and Recovery
