Researchers from the University of Connecticut at Storrs and Solution Spray Technologies, also of Storrs, presented a discussion of yttrium aluminum garnet thermal barrier coatings at ITSC 2019 in Japan.
The researchers showed that yttrium aluminum garnet thermal barrier coatings made by the solution precursor plasma spray (SPPS) process have a full range of desirable properties compared to YSZ. These properties include superior cyclic furnace test lives, lower thermal conductivity, better CMAS resistance, and better [CJ1] small particle erosion resistance. The YAG coating also showed a much smaller increase in thermal conductivity by sintering, and most significantly, a higher allowable service temperature. The researchers also reviewed experimental data showing these favorable properties of SPPS YAG TBCs.
In producing SPPS coatings for commercial use, other factors also become important, including deposition rate, deposition efficiency , standoff distance, and repeatability. The presentation also discussed progress made in these production-relevant aspects of the SPPS process.
Because the SPPS process shares similar characteristics with the suspension plasma spray process, some of the results presented provided relevance to the SPS process as well.
