Brunel University, London, reports that a research team has found a patented niobium-base master alloy that not only fills the missing gap in grain refiners for magnesium alloys, but also offers significant advantages over titanium in aluminum-silicon alloys.
Carbon nanotubes protect aluminum under radiation
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, reports that researchers have found that, at least in some nuclear reactors, adding less than 2% of carbon nanotubes to aluminum can dramatically slow the breakdown process that causes it to become porous and brittle.
