GT Advanced Technologies produces large-area sapphire (aluminum oxide ceramic) substrates for scratch-free cell phone covers and high-brightness LEDs.  The single-crystal sapphire is produced in furnaces that provide a highly automated operating environment capable of producing consistently uniform sapphire boules that can be cut into products with excellent optical, mechanical, and transmission properties.
