Bruker microCT, Belgium, introduces the SkyScan 1172, a high-resolution desktop microtomography (micro-CT) system for 3D nondestructive X-ray imaging of an object’s internal microstructure. The 3D imaging microscopy system enables imaging very fine-scale internal structures. No sample preparation is required, and a single scan images the sample’s complete internal 3D structure at high resolution.
The micro-CT system is based on a micro-focus X-ray source that illuminates the object, and a planar X-ray detector that collects magnified projection images. Based on hundreds of angular views acquired while the object rotates, a computer synthesizes a stack of virtual cross-section slices through the object.
The operator can then scroll through the cross sections, interpolating sections along different planes, to inspect the internal structure. Selecting simple or complex volumes of interest allows measurement of 3D morphometric parameters, and creates realistic visual models for virtual travel within the object.
The flexible geometry of the SkyScan 1172 scanner is particularly advantageous over intermediate resolution levels, where scans are several times faster (to obtain the same or better image quality) compared to micro-CT systems with a fixed source-detector design. The new large format cooled Xray digital camera achieves high spatial resolution without compromising sample size.
