JW Aluminum, Mount Holly, S.C., has started construction of a new 220,000-square-foot flat-rolled aluminum plant that will feature a Hazelett twin-belt continuous casting machine. JW says that the installation of proven, state-of-the-art equipment utilizing green technology will ultimately result in 175 million pounds of new capacity, and will greatly enhance its ability to serve its primary end markets.
Home to both corporate offices and main building sheet mill, the Mount Holly location services primarily building and construction, automotive/transportation, and general distribution customers. Primary focus is on 3xxx series alloys, and this facility produces 1xxx, 7xxx, and 8xxx series alloys as well. Other JW facilities are located in St. Louis, Missouri; Russellville, Arkansas; and Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
“The outcome of this endeavor will empower us to produce superior product for our customers, to provide increased value to our stakeholders, and to become a preferred supplier and employer for decades to come,” says Lee McCarter, Chief Executive Officer.
Hazelett Corp., Colchester, Vt., announces that the Hazelett Twin-Belt Continuous Casting Process will be utilized for the JW Aluminum expansion. The Hazelett Model AS2000 casting machine being supplied is capable of producing 2000 mm wide strip at approximately 50 metric tons per hour. Alloy capabilities include 1XXX, 3XXX, 5XXX, and 6XXX series.
“This new facility will be a model for the most cost-effective and energy-efficient sheet production in North America,” says David Hazelett, President. “And, it will significantly ease the projected shortage of aluminum coil in the United States. JW Aluminum’s commitment to building the world’s best casting and rolling facility has been reflected in their intensive planning efforts. We are excited to be a part of this project.”
