Murata multi-layer ceramic capacitor is 50 times smaller than conventional capacitors

Murata Electronics North America, Smyrna, Ga., announces that the company has developed the world’s first multi-layer ceramic capacitor, with 0.1μF dimensions of 0.25×0.125 mm. Mass production of the new product — the GRM011R60J104M — is scheduled to begin in 2020.

The innovation comes as the demand for smaller and higher density electronic circuitry continues to grow as smartphones that support 5G become more widespread and other electronics such as wearable devices become more multifunctional and compact.

Murata notes that, as one of the components in such device circuitry, multi-layer ceramic capacitors will be essential and are used for a wide range of applications. The company said high-end smartphones are typically equipped with 800 to 1000 capacitors, driving the need for them to become ever-more compact.

“By using our original ceramic and electrode material atomization and homogenization technology, Murata has achieved a mounting surface area approximately 50 percent smaller and a volume approximately 80 percent smaller than that of our conventional product (01005-inch size) with a capacitance of 0.1μF. Moreover, the new product has a capacity of about ten times that of the same-sized product initially mass-produced by the company. (008004-inch size, Press release on May 7, 2014 “World’s First! Murata Launches Mass Production of World’s Smallest 0201-size (0.25 x 0.125 mm).

Murata said that going forward, it will continue to conduct research and development into ceramics and high-precision, microscopic layering technology for electrode materials, expand its lineup to meet the needs of the market and contribute to the further miniaturization and greater functionality of electronic devices.
