Understanding Bridges—Suspension Bridges
This video from How Stuff Works shows the building of the 1600-foot Brooklyn Bridge in 1883, describing how it was successful because of the many innovations by engineer John Roebling. He designed the first cable-stayed bridge, and devised a method of connecting thousands of miles of steel cable to the bridge. The video also shows the collapse of the Tacoma Narrows bridge, when engineers neglected to take the wind into consideration when they built it.
