Air Force Names Stealth Bomber after WWII Doolittle Raiders
The U.S. Air Force has announced that its new long-range stealth bomber will be called the B-21 Raider, as a tribute to the famed WWII Doolittle Raiders. Northrop won a contract in October to build 100 of the B-21s, which are scheduled to replace the aging B-52 and B-1 bombers some time in the mid 2020s.
The B-21 Raider looks very similar to the B-2 Spirit, which was also built by Northrop Grumman. The Spirit entered service in 1997, but only 21 were built, at a “flyaway cost” of $737 million each, before the program was canceled in 2000.
The new stealth bomber will be able to carry the upgraded B-61 nuclear bomb, and will also be armed with new-generation cruise missiles with a range of up to 3000 miles.
