Metallurgy Breakthrough: 3D Printing High-Strength Aluminum

Researchers at HRL Laboratories LLC have designed a new method that enables high-strength aluminum alloys, as well as high-strength steels and nickel-based superalloys, to be used in 3D printing. Their research, including how they overcame hot cracking during the manufacturing process, was published in the September 21 issue of Nature.
