IMR Test Labs, Lansing, N.Y., now offers metallurgical services using a Keyence VHX-5000 microscope, which allows IMR to provide enhanced 3D, free-angle imaging at magnifications previously not available. The instrument also enables more-accurate measurements and photomicrographs of samples.
The free-angle stand provides the ability to tilt the lens around the object being viewed, and to rotate the stage, all while keeping the object centered on screen. In addition, the large depth of field means that everything stays in focus, regardless of the viewing angle.
When the motorized XY stage is moved, the Z axis also scans the lens through each focal plane, capturing 50 frames per second of image data. From those images, only the areas with in-focus data are automatically extracted, resulting in a fully-focused image in as little as one second.
With advanced technology available through Keyence, the VHX-5000 acquires a high-resolution image with short-wavelength light, and the HDR function captures high color gradation images at different exposures, and then compiles them into a single image.
The VHX Series is designed to be an all-in-one system, providing users the ability to observe, capture, and measure with a single system. The optimized workflow helps to reduce inspection and analysis time. The advanced functions of the VHX-5000 increase the efficiency of basic analytical operations such as observation, image capturing, and unit measuring, which permit faster turnaround on many metallurgical tests. The VHX-5000 is nondestructive, so after testing is complete, valuable materials can be returned. Additionally, the VHX-5000 is portable, allowing IMR to test oversize samples and to test samples offsite.
