ASB Industries, Barberton, Ohio, announces that it recently upgraded a section of its cryogenic high-pressure gas system with a new Messer/Linde Presus N10 liquid nitrogen pump, an energy-efficient unit that features up to 90% less energy consumption than gas compression units, and delivers nitrogen at high pressure.
The pump pressurizes liquid nitrogen by a hydraulically operated, slow-moving piston before evaporation. Its flow rate is at least five times higher than gas compressors, and it eliminates risk of nitrogen purity contamination due to its oil-free operation. It is an updated technology for industrial processes such as gas-assist cold spray, injection molding, laser-beam cutting, and other processes where high-pressure gases are necessary.
The main process gas for cold spraying is nitrogen. Critical particle velocity is required for physical build-up of coatings and for additive manufacturing. Unlike thermal spray processes, cold-sprayed materials in powder form with different densities require stable high-pressure nitrogen for bonding and interparticle adhesion. PLC controls throughout the system, along with high-pressure-rated valves and piping, are required during spraying for both production and critical material and application development.
Linde Corporation provided installation, in conjunction with safety checks. The upgraded system is located adjacent to the cold spray process area that utilizes the Impact Innovations 5/11 System, with an ABB robot and five-ton crane capabilities.
