The Center for Hierarchical Materials Design (CHiMaD), a NIST-sponsored center of excellence for advanced materials research and a critical component of the Materials Genome Initiative (MGI), has released its first annual report, documenting the progress of the 35 principal investigators, 27 postdoctoral research fellows, 38 graduate students, and four undergraduates that comprise the CHiMaD research team. The 62-page report highlights achievements in various areas of research, including polymer matrix materials, precipitation-strengthened alloys, Si composites, low-dimensional nanoelectronic materials, data mining, organic solar cells, block copolymer films, and biomaterials. It also discusses tool development efforts and outreach activities that include workshops, symposiums, and seminars and the ASM Materials Genome Toolkit competition, which recently awarded six engineering schools with state-of-the-art computational materials design software.
