AFC-Holcroft, Wixom, Mich., offers its Universal Batch Intensive Quenching (UBIQ) furnace, developed for the growing IntensiQuench market. Intensive quenching is a very rapid and uniform cooling of steel parts that causes the simultaneous formation of martensite throughout the whole part surface, creating a firm shell. The strong martensite case or shell minimizes part distortion. Metallurgical processes include neutral hardening, carburizing, carbonitriding, normalizing, and annealing.
TEM DualBeam systems enable analysis and fabrication of nanoscale devices
FEI Co., Hillsboro, Ore., introduces two DualBeam systems that feature high-quality imaging and fast analysis over the broadest range of samples. The Helios NanoLab 660 DualBeam adds capabilities for specialized applications, such as the fabrication of prototypes for nanometer-scale devices. As shown in the photo, EasyLift’s low-drift, high-precision movements allow simple and consistent creation of traditional TEM lamellae or ultra-thin lamellae via the inverted thinning technique.
Airbrushed carbon nanofibers
Researchers from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, used airbrushing techniques to grow vertically aligned carbon nanofibers on several different metal substrates, opening the door for incorporating these nanofibers into gene delivery devices, sensors, batteries and other technologies.

Evraz to expand heat treat capacity at Calgary tubular plant by 150%
Evraz North America, Chicago, announces Board approval of its plan to expand heat treat and threading capacity at its tubular facility in Calgary, Alberta. The multimillion dollar project, which will commence next month, includes expanding heat treat capacity by over 150% and threading capacity by about 40%. Work is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2014.
