Anasys Instruments, Santa Barbara, Calif., announces the nanoIR2, a second generation AFM based IR spectroscopy (AFM-IR) platform. A key breakthrough is the ability of the nanoIR2 to operate with top-side illumination, eliminating the prior need to prepare samples on a ZnSe prism and enabling measurements on a much more diverse set of samples.
Century Aluminum acquires Sebree smelter
Century Aluminum Co., Chicago Ill., announces that its wholly owned subsidiary has completed the transaction with Rio Tinto Alcan Inc. to acquire substantially all of the assets of the Sebree aluminum smelter. The Sebree smelter, located in Henderson County, Kentucky, has an annual production capacity of 205,000 metric tons of primary aluminum. Century Aluminum Company owns primary aluminum capacity in the United States and Iceland.

Nanotechnique creates image 30 µm in width The world’s most famous painting has now been created on the world’s smallest canvas. Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Altanta, “painted” the Mona Lisa on a substrate surface approximately 30 µm in width-one-third the width of a human hair.
