Cummins Inc., Columbus, Ind., a global power leader, was awarded an $87M contract by the U.S. Army to complete the development of the Advanced Combat Engine, a modular and scalable diesel engine solution capable of hybridization that uses innovative opposed-piston technology to provide leap-ahead capabilities in power density and heat rejection not available in the current marketplace.

Raman spectrometry serves critical role in Mars rover mission

The Mars 2020 Perseverance rover successfully landed on Mars on February 18 and started its search for signs of past life on the red planet. The rover will be characterizing the planet’s geology, including collecting and identifying the composition of Martian rocks and dirt. A Raman spectrometer, which is part of the rover’s on-board laboratory, will help to perform one of the mission’s key goals of analyzing the sulfate content in the Martian soil.

Perryman increases titanium melting capacity

Perryman, Pennsylvania, announced today it will more than double its current titanium melting capacity through the addition of two new furnaces. The new furnaces will include one Electron Beam (EB) and one Vacuum Arc Remelt (VAR). They will be located with Perryman’s existing melting facilities on its California, Pa., campus. Once complete, the company’s total melt capacity will exceed 26 million pounds, placing Perryman among the world’s largest melters of aerospace quality titanium.

Seco/Warwick supplies vacuum oil quenching furnace to the US Department of Defense

Seco/Vacuum, Pennsylvania, has supplied the US Department of Defense with a vacuum heat treating furnace with integral oil quench, high pressure gas quench, and low pressure carburizing capabilities. As a critical supplier of aerospace components to the U.S. Department of Defense, this new vacuum oil quenching furnace will be able to handle any of the functions of the department’s existing heat treatment furnaces, either in a redundant role or to provide additional capacity to any of them.

DOE awards funding for Phase I of ULTIMATE Program: ASM Members lead selected projects

The U.S. Department of Energy announced $16 million in funding for 17 projects as part of Phase 1 of the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy’s (ARPA-E) Ultrahigh Temperature Impervious Materials Advancing Turbine Efficiency (ULTIMATE) program. ULTIMATE teams will develop ultrahigh temperature materials for gas turbine use in the aviation and power generation industries. Several ASM members served as the lead technical lead/principal investigator for winning projects.
